Travel diary in Santorini: our adventure in the heart of the Cyclades

In the heart of the Cyclades, Santorini is one of those islands that leaves its mark at first glance. From the plane or boat, you can already make out its silhouette, formed by the volcanic eruption that shaped the caldera. As you approach, the white villages perched on the cliffside appear, their blue domes standing out against the Aegean Sea horizon.

Santorini is a unique blend of raw beauty and Mediterranean calm. People come here for its legendary sunsets and spectacular panoramas, but also for the atmosphere of its narrow streets, its volcanic beaches with surprising colors, and its friendly taverns where you can savor a gyros or moussaka.

Both romantic and wild, this island is a journey in itself. Each village, each cove, each sea excursion reveals a new facet of its character. And it is this diversity that makes Santorini so unforgettable.

Must-see and must-do things

Santorini offers incredible diversity: whitewashed villages clinging to the caldera, volcanic beaches with surprising colors, and magnificent sea views. Here are the experiences you absolutely must experience.

🏘️ Stroll through the iconic villages

In Santorini, each village has its own character. Oia captivates with its sunsets and narrow streets lined with galleries. Fira, the capital perched on the caldera, combines museums and spectacular viewpoints. More peaceful, Imerovigli offers breathtaking panoramas from Skaros Rock. For a more authentic atmosphere, Pyrgos and Megalochori reveal unspoiled streets and authentic local life.

🌅 Admire the sunsets

Santorini is world-renowned for its flamboyant sunsets. Oia remains the most famous spot, but Imerovigli and Akrotiri offer more tranquil alternatives.

🏝️ Discover the volcanic beaches

Red Beach fascinates with its red cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, a spectacular but often crowded setting. More accessible, Kamari and Perissa offer long, perfectly landscaped stretches of black sand, ideal for combining swimming and relaxation. More discreet, Vlychada seduces with its wild charm, surrounded by white cliffs sculpted by the wind, giving it an almost lunar appearance.

⛵ Sea Excursions

A sunset catamaran cruise allows you to admire the caldera in its most beautiful colors, while a traditional boat trip takes you to the hot springs of Palea Kameni and the Nea Kameni volcano.

🏺 Explore History and Culture

The archaeological site of Akrotiri, nicknamed the "Pompeii of the Aegean Sea," delves into the island's past. The ancient city of Thera, perched on a promontory, offers both ancient ruins and breathtaking views.

🌊 Enjoy water activities

Kayaking, paddleboarding, or snorkeling allow you to discover Santorini from the sea. Sailing along volcanic cliffs, exploring secluded coves, or diving into the turquoise waters offers another side of the island, combining relaxation and adventure.

My fondest memories of Santorini

Santorini gave me many memorable moments, but some will remain etched in my memory as real favourites.
The most memorable was undoubtedly the catamaran cruise at sunset: gliding across the Aegean Sea, seeing the caldera light up with flamboyant colours and admiring Oia from the water is a magical experience. Another wonderful discovery was the interactive Lost Atlantis Experience museum. Fun, modern and available in several languages, it helps visitors understand the volcanic origins of Santorini and its fascinating history.

When it came to food, I succumbed to the simplicity and generosity of Greek cuisine: gyros, moussaka and souvlaki are among my favourite dishes.

In terms of landscapes, Red Beach impressed me with its red cliffs plunging into turquoise water, despite the crowds, and I enjoyed the seaside atmosphere of the black sand beaches of Kamari and Perissa. Of course, I can't fail to mention Oia, a real picture postcard with its blue domes and picturesque narrow streets, where I loved enjoying breakfast overlooking the sea.

Finally, the trip to the Hot Springs and the hike to the top of the Nea Kameni volcano made a particular impression on me. With our guide, we had the chance to touch a stone that was still hot, a striking reminder that the volcano is still active and that the island lives to the rhythm of its exceptional nature.

Practical Advice

Here are some simple tips for discovering the island in the best possible conditions!

🚌 Getting Around Easily

The bus is a practical and economical solution: it connects the island's main villages for only €2 to €2.50 one-way (summer 2025). For more freedom, many rental companies offer quads, scooters, and cars throughout the island, with easy rentals.

📅 Choosing the Right Time

Even in the middle of August, the island can remain pleasant: during my trip just after August 15th, it wasn't crowded, except in Oia when the cruise ships disembarked. Spring and early autumn, however, offer ideal weather and a more peaceful atmosphere.

💡 Electricity and Water

As everywhere in Greece, the plugs are European-style (no adapter needed). Tap water is not always drinkable: bottled water is recommended.

🍽️ Eat Locally

Get out of the touristy villages and try the tavernas in Pyrgos, Megalochori, or Emporio: lower prices and a more authentic atmosphere.

My favourite places

In terms of accommodation, I really liked the Astir Thira Hotel, a small family-run establishment located very close to the centre of Fira. Ideally located for easy access to the bus station and for travelling around the island by bus, this hotel offers charming and spacious rooms, a swimming pool just opposite and a friendly atmosphere. The breakfast is simple but effective, perfect for starting the day off right.
As for restaurants, I made some great discoveries:

• and Fanari restaurant, a welcoming place to enjoy local cuisine.
